This past Sunday I experienced the internet come to life at the 2nd annual Complexcon hosted by Complex magazine. The convention merges music, fashion, art and food through brand activations, pop-up shops, concerts and more. I arrived to Long Beach, California at around noon for day two with a personal schedule of who and what I wanted to see because I didn’t want to waste any time. Of course, the schedule didn’t go as planned but I can’t complain, the event was so overwhelming that I’m still finding out about what took place during the day. For some reason I thought day two energy wouldn’t match up to day one for the simple fact that N*E*R*D performed their whole unreleased album Saturday night but I’m still on a high from what I witnessed Sunday.
I started the day at the Pigeons and Planes stage, where I saw Chloe X Halle perform and also Noname who announced that she has new music on the way after she performed an unnamed track. Afterwards, I began to explore the hundreds of exhibits throughout the convention. I was excited to see the Nike installation but of course the line was extremely long and hectic, I later found out that Kobe Bryant and Kendrick Lamar were inside having a panel discussion, so I completely missed out on that. My favorite booth I shopped at was Melody Ehsani, the M.E. girls are the best. Their booth featured an exclusive collaboration with Reebok and directly across K Swiss launched their collaboration with Married To The Mob. It was interesting to see the creative route some of the brands took with their booths, Diamond Supply partnered with artist RETNA for a live graffiti session. The Adidas brand created an immersive experience that I got to watch from outside the booth, they released new collabs with Pharrell and Pusha T and allowed fans to win exclusive products.
Out of the 12 hours that I was there, my favorite part of the day was the “iamOTHER #BeGreat Party ft. Special Guests” set. I had no idea what to expect but I knew Pharrell was going to be involved so I was interested. Even though I missed out on the “The Art of Collab” panel with Andre 3000 that was going on at the same time, I would have been devastated to find out what I missed on the Pigeons and Planes stage. To start out, the artists on Pharrell’s i am OTHER label performed included Buddy, Bia, Kap G and Watch The Duck – who were all incredible. Big K.R.I.T., OG Maco and Leikeli also came out and matched the energy.
After this, Pharrell decided to take things to another level by bringing out Ty Dolla $ign and Wiz Khalifa to perform “Stare” from Ty Dolla $ign new project “Beach House”. I thought that this was very much the finale but Pharrell had other plans, if you know me you know that Lil Uzi Vert is my favorite person right now. So, I was completely shook seeing them perform “Neon Guts” for the first time live. 2 Chainz also came out with his dog and Migos ended the set with “Bad and Boujee”. I ended the night at the arena stage where I saw Young Thug, M.I.A. and Gucci Mane perform.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see any of the panels but my first time at Complexcon was a success. I met some amazing people and I enjoyed everything from the experiential shopping to the celebrity sightings. I for sure will be attending Complexcon again in the future.
